About the CSS color names

CSS ships with 141 named colors that you can write out in full — tomato, rebeccapurple, gainsboro — instead of a hex code. They are not a modern palette. Most arrived from the X11 window system in the 1980s, which is why the set has ten shades of gray with inconsistent spellings and no orange until HTML 4 added one.

Names are handy while you are sketching: background: tomato reads at a glance and needs no lookup. They are a poor fit for finished work, because the set has gaps where you need them most — there is no muted blue between steelblue and slategray, and the greens jump from limegreen straight to forestgreen with nothing in between.

Two spellings are worth knowing. gray and grey both work everywhere and mean the same thing, as do all their compounds. And rebeccapurple was added in 2014 in memory of Eric Meyer's daughter — the only named color in CSS with a dedication behind it.
